"Frequently Asked Questions"

Here is a list of some of the most frequently asked questions that we have encountered over the years...

  1. What is there to do on the Island?

Isle Royale is the only National Park in Michigan and only one of two island National Parks. It is designated a wilderness park and as such, 99% of the island must be maintained as wilderness. One-percent of the park is developed: Rock Harbor, at the northeast end, which features a lodge, duplex cottages, gift shop, restaurant and grill, a small store, Visitors Center, and other amenities; Windigo, which is at the other end of the island features a snack bar and Visitors Center.

There are over 165 miles of foot trails and numerous of inland lakes and fjord-like harbors perfect for boating, canoeing, and kayaking.

The island is also an educational experience for young and old. At some campsites, the rangers provide a nightly lecture about Isle Royale and the very delicate balance of nature it hosts.

One of the most researched wildlife balances in history is that between the wolves and moose populations on the island. Most backpackers will see a moose or two on the trail, and several have been spotted by day passengers while on their short walks near the Rock Harbor Lodge. A few wolves have been seen lately during the summertime. Often, at night when the moon is bright, their haunting howling can be heard.

  2. How much does it cost to get there?

From July 15 through August 15, the One Way fare aboard the Isle Royale Queen IV, which sails to Rock Harbor, is $62. From May 12 through July 14 and August 16 through September 29 the One Way fare is $54. Children 11 and under sail at half price. For a confirmed, guaranteed reservation, a full fare deposit is required. Cancellations made up to 3 days before sailing will receive an 85% refund.

  3. What if the weather is bad and the boat can't make the trip?

The Isle Royale Queen rarely cancels a trip in the summer due to weather, though we have delayed a few, especially in late summer or in late September. However, all trips are subject to safe sailing conditions and trips may be delayed until weather permits a safe crossing.

  4. How long does the trip take?

It takes about 3 hours one way. We leave Copper Harbor at 8:00 a.m. EDT (Eastern Daylight Time), and depart Rock Harbor on Isle Royale at 2:45 p.m. (see schedule).

  5. Do you serve food during the trip?

Usually. We depend on local bakers to supply bakery and sandwiches. A snack bar with coffee, soda, and candy, etc. is always available.

  6. Is it cold on the Island?

It's about the same as Copper Harbor. The lake can be quite cool even in July so warm clothing is strongly encouraged. Shorts and sandals are not advised. If you have any doubt, ask the Captain upon departure.

  7. Where can I leave my car?

Parking is available adjacent to our dock. There is a modest charge of $5 per night with a maximum of $20. To speed up parking and boarding in the morning, we recommend paying the parking fee along with your reservation. An attendant will be present to assist you.

  8. How much luggage can I take?

70 pounds of luggage or gear is included free with each reservation. If you expect to transport excess baggage, please inform us and we will quote the additional charge.

  9. Can we take our pet?

Domestic pets (dogs, cats etc.) are prohibited on Isle Royale.

  10. Can we take our own gasoline to the island?

No. Gasoline is available on the island throughout the season. We do transport backpacking stove fuel in well closed, small containers. These will be stowed separately. Do not stow fuel in backpacks!

  11. Will I get sick?

You may. If you fear that you may suffer from motion discomfort, your physician can prescribe Transderm Scop. Other less effective remedies are available over the counter.

  12. Do I need to make a reservation in advance?

Usually. It depends on the month and day that you are planning your trip. Our busiest time of the year is the last 2 weeks in July and the first 2 weeks in August. A general rule of thumb is to make reservations as soon as your party settles on the dates it wants to go and have made your travel arrangements We start taking reservations January 1st each year. Call (906) 289-4437 for reservations and information.
